Chanukah, the Jewish "Festival of Lights"
is coming up in about a month, so last week at our JCC class we used a reverse painting technique to create "Chanukiot," which is Hebrew for Chanukah Menorahs, with some masking tape, heavy watercolor paper, and watercolors. We also added some other nice elements for the fire effect on the eight candles and the Shamash (the 9th candle, usually sits taller, which is used to light the other 8 candles).
We started by pasting strips of masking tape on the paper, like so, with one long strip as the base, 8 shorter strips standing on the base, and one longer strip for the Shamash. Each child chose if they wanted the Shamash in the center or on the side. Some of the children pasted the strips themselves, and some needed a bit more help.
Then we began painting with watercolors..
